The Story Behind InsCoder

We wanted a place to create meaningful work alongside great people. So, we built it—this is our journey.

Hey there—

I’m Billy Yeung, one of the co-founders of InsCoder, a company based in Hong Kong. Together with my co-founder, Cesar Ho, I have been running InsCoder since 2016. We are now a small but dedicated team of 20 people. Most of us live in Hong Kong, and we have worked fully remotely since day one.

Before starting InsCoder, Cesar and I both worked as software engineers at HSBC, a UK-based bank. We began our careers there and stayed for over 10 years before deciding to start our own company. People often ask why we left the secure, well-benefited environment of a large corporation to venture into the unknown.

For us, it was about reclaiming freedom: the freedom to work efficiently, without the burden of excessive bureaucracy; the freedom to innovate as early adopters, not laggards; the freedom to work wherever we felt most productive, which didn't necessarily mean a "traditional office." Ultimately, it was about choosing projects that inspire us—projects we could look back on with pride, even years later.

During our tenure at HSBC, we learned invaluable lessons: maintaining integrity through the "sunshine test," upholding high standards in our work, handling sensitive customer data securely, and delivering the best customer experience possible. We're deeply grateful for those lessons, but it was time to create a workplace we would truly enjoy for the rest of our careers.

At InsCoder today, we focus on helping our clients succeed in the e-commerce space. We work with some of the world's biggest brands, as well as emerging names locally in Hong Kong and China. If you walk into any major shopping center, there's a good chance you'll encounter one of our clients—supported by our small yet powerful team. It is a testament that small teams can achieve great things.

We chose Shopify as the sole solution for our clients because they make the most sense for us and for them. Data security is a non-negotiable priority, and Shopify outshines every competitor in this regard. This is one of the main reasons we decided to dedicate our work to Shopify—so that we and our clients can sleep peacefully at night, knowing customer data is safe.

People often ask why we focus solely on e-commerce instead of building websites or creating mobile apps. We've been there, done that. E-commerce continues to be the most inspiring type of project for our team, so we will dedicate ourselves fully to it for the long term.

This journey has been incredible. Many of the clients who joined us in our first year are still with us today, and our growth has been largely driven by word of mouth rather than aggressive marketing. We believe we're offering something truly unique in this industry.
